EMV is a type of technology for credit and debit cards that helps prevent fraudulent transactions. EMV terminals work by reading a chip on the credit or debit card, which is harder for fraudsters to copy compared to a credit or debit card’s magnetic stripe. For more information about how EMV helps to prevent fraud, see How does EMV help to prevent fraud?
EMV cards are also known as chip cards and can have different types of cardholder verification. Depending on the type of cardholder verification that the EMV card supports, your terminal will prompt for one of the following during a transaction:
- Chip and PIN – Cardholder inserts their card into the card slot on your terminal and then enters their PIN.
- Chip and signature – Cardholder inserts their card into the card slot on your terminal and then provides their signature.
- Contactless -Cardholder holds their card over your terminal’s contactless reader.
