To set up your Genius P400, complete the following steps:
Part 1. Attach the cables to your Genius P400
Important: Do not attach a Power over Ethernet (POE) cable to your Genius P400. Attaching a POE cable to your Genius P400 can damage the connection ports.
To set up your Genius P400, attach the following:
- Utility cable
- Network cable
- 12V power adapter
Attach the utility cable to your Genius P400
The utility cable is an extension cable that you can use to connect the power cable and network cable to your Genius P400. To attach the utility cable to your Genius P400, complete the following steps:
Step 1. Turn your Genius P400 upside–down and place it on a flat, stable surface.
Step 2. Remove the rear cover by sliding it up and lifting it off.
Step 3. Attach the utility cable to your Genius P400. Push the connector straight down so that you don’t bend the pins.
Step 4. Slide the rear cover back onto your Genius P400 until it clicks.
Attach the network cable to the utility cable
The network cable connects your Genius P400 to your router, so that your Genius P400 can connect to the internet and to your POS. To attach the network cable to the utility cable, complete the following steps:
Step 1. Insert one end of the network cable into an available port on your router or switch.
Step 2. Insert the other end of the network cable into the Ether port on the utility cable.
Attach the power adapter to the utility cable
The 12V power adapter connects your Genius P400 to a power source. To attach the 12V power adapter to the utility cable, complete the following steps:
Step 1. Insert the 12V power adapter into the power port on the utility cable.
Step 2. Plug the 12V power adapter into a power socket. Your Genius P400 should turn on.

Part 2. Set the IP address for your Genius P400
You can set up one of the following types of IP addresses on your Genius P400:
Option 1. Dynamic IP – When you use a dynamic IP address, a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server automatically assigns an IP address to the devices connected to your network. If the network is disconnected or if the DHCP server is rebooted, the server automatically reassigns the IP addresses, which means the IP address of your Genius P400 can change.
If the IP address of your Genius P400 changes, your POS can no longer communicate with your Genius P400. You need to update your POS with the new IP address.
Option 2. Static IP – When you use a static IP address, you manually assign an IP address to each device connected to your network.
By default, your Genius P400 uses a dynamic IP address, this means you need only to configure your POS to target your Genius P400 ’s IP address. However, you can configure a static IP address on your Genius P400 instead of using a dynamic IP address.
Part 3. Configure your POS to work with your Genius P400
Your POS can communicate with your Genius P400 using either an IP address or a host name. Consult with your POS provider to determine which of the following options you should use:
Option 1. IP address – An IP address is a unique address that allows devices to communicate with each other. By default, your Genius P400 uses a dynamic IP address. If your IP address changes often, or if your POS requires a Static IP address, you can set a static IP address on your Genius P400.
Option 2. Host name – A host name is a unique name we give to your Genius P400.
To configure your POS, you need the following:
- Your Merchantware credentials, including your:
– Merchantware name
– Site ID
– Authentication key
